Special Course & grading with Sensei Y. Ohta

It was the third year chief instructor Sensei Yoshinobu Ohta (7th Dan JKA) visited us. Over eighty karate students attended the popular training session by JKA England’s Chief Instructor.

Over the years Sensei Ohta has build up a reputation as a very popular and technically brilliant senior instructor.  He teaches at all JKAE national courses, abroad, as well as at his own clubs in Covent Garden and Chelsea. He has also recently appeared in the first episode of “Ninja Warrior” on Challenge TV.

Thirteen medals – JKA England National Championships

Well we certainly didn’t go home empty handed – taking THIRTEEN medals for various individual and team categories. At the end of the competition, the Japanese Ambassador’s Cup was awarded to Ernst Theron for “Best Junior Male” by  Chief Instructor, Sensei Y. Ohta.

For the first time, JKA-England hosted both the Black and Brown belts and Kyu Grade Championships on the same day. With around 600 competitors entering and over 300 spectators, the K2 sports centre was the venue for the event which had earlier in the year also hosted the Junior European Championships.

The Kata and Kumite events were first with some excellent displays in the elimination rounds by all competitors. The standards increase year on year but this was a particularly high standard on all fronts.

JKA W/F European Championships – April 2011

A very well done to Harry Theron who took BRONZE for Cadet Team Kumite. I’m sure Ricardo would have bagged another trophy had he not been injured –  he recovered in time to support his England team members for the finals and his ribs are now on the mend!

Junior Squad member Amy Walsh did a fantastic job by assisting and so did club member Phoebe Hennessy who was our very own England flag mascot!

Sensei Bura (8th Dan) opened the day paying tribute to the Japanese Tsunami victims by everyone in the hall respectfully observing silence for a minute. The eliminations for Kata were first, with individual eliminations through to semi final rounds followed by the team kata events. Read more of this post
