KYU Grade National Championships 2009

The JKA England Kyu Grade National Championships were held at the Elmbridge Xcel Leisure Complex, Walton On Thames last Sunday. Over 200 competitors  from around the country arrived for the Kata and Kumite events.

The tournament started with kata eliminations which led from first round stages to the finals. In the afternoon the kumite events commenced with competitors either competing Kihon Ippon or Sanbon Kumite elimination rounds. Finalists were  presented with their medals and certificates from Sensei Chubachi and Sensei Ohta. Sensei Chubachi, is a visiting JKA Honbu instructor. 

Connor took Bronze for Kata, Sophie took Bronze for Kumite and Molly took Silver for kumite.  A big well done to Sam, Callum, John, Steve, Mary and Cadet Coach, Amy. Read more of this post

Sensei Ohta Visits Colchester

Sensei OhtaWe welcomed our Chief Instructor Sensei Y.Ohta (6th Dan JKA) for the very first time at the beginning of the month.

Sensei Ohta is a graduate of Takushoku University, he has also attended the famous JKA Instructors Classes. Between 1982 and 2003 he was the official assistant to Sensei K. Enoeda 9th Dan (deceased). During this time Ohta Sensei built up an international reputation and is now considered as one of the most popular and technically skilled Shotokan Instructors in the world today.

Brown and black belts had the privilege of training with Sensei, working on distance basics and the kata Enpi.

The all grades session afterwards was very popular and included all the Heian katas, Tekki-Shodan and Bassai-Dai. Read more of this post
